CRAWFORD NAMED CALIFORNIA FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR Freshmen:
J.P. Crawford, Lakewood (Lakewood, Calif.)
Showing why he starred with the USA 14U National Team last summer, Crawford had a sensational first season with the Lancers. He hit .410, scored 49 runs, and drove in 21 runs. He was pretty consistent all season long as he recorded at least one hit in 29 of the teams 34 games with 17 of those being multi-hit games. Crawford also was 20 of 22 stealing bases.
In the Pan Am championship game in Ecuador last summer, J.P. crossed the plate as the winning run in a 4-3 victory over Puerto Rico for the gold medal.
Before this season, Lakewood head coach Spud ONeil had never started a freshman in 27 years of coaching before handing the starting shortstop position over to Crawford.
J.P.s sister, Eliza, just graduated from Lakewood and is an all-state candidate in softball.
Crawford is the second State Freshman of the Year from the Long Beach areas Moore League. The first was former Little League star Sean Burroughs from Wilson (Long Beach, Calif.) in 1995.
