NEWS AND NOTES LANCERS ADVANCE TO SEMI'S VAR (3/9) - The Lancers scored 2 in the first inning after Crawford (1-3 2B R) walked, and Schultz (1-4 R) singled to right field. With 2 outs, Razo (1-1 3B, 2RBI) hit a triple that scored both runs. The score remained 2-0 until the 6th inning. With 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Leidholt(1-3 2RBI) hit a single that drove in both runs and gave Lakewood a 4-0 lead. Timely hitting, and another great pitching performance was the story for this game. Sanchez pitched 5 innings of hitless ball. In doing so he struck out 5 Broncos and walked 2. Padilla got the save by pitching a scoreless 6th and 7th inning. He struck out 4 and pitched the Lancers out of a jam in the 6th, when he inherited 2 runners with no outs. Lancer pitchers held Vista Murietta to 1 hit. Lakewood will now advance to the semi-finals. Offense contributors: Bernal (1-3)
LAKEWOOD JV BREAKS TIE IN 8TH INNING FOR FIRST SEASON WIN AGAINST VILLA PARK JV (3/8) - Lakewood JV started off their season with a 4-3 win over Villa Park. Fisher pitched 3 innings striking out 2 batters, allowing 3 singles, 1 HR and 3 ERs. He was followed by Green who pitched 4 with 2 SOs and 2 singles. Hamil came in as relief in the top of the 8th inning and shut down Villa Park in order. Offensively, JV started off in the 2nd inning with a walk by Mendez (1-3, 1BB, 1B, 1RBI)followed by a single by Ronca (1-2, 1B). An error during the play allowed Mendez to score for the first run of the game. In the bottom of the 5th, Dixon (2-3, 1B, 2B, 1RBI, 1R) hit a double, followed by a single by Merriman (1-3, 1B, 1RBI)which drove in the 2nd run of the game. The bottom of the 6th saw a single by Pasillas (2-4, 2-1B, 2R) who was driven in by Dixon. At the bottom of the 8th, the team was looking at a 3-3 tie. Pasillas started off with a single. He was able to steal 2nd base placing him in scoring position. Mendez hit a single down the left field line scoring Pasillas for the winning run.
LANCER FROSH GET SECOND WIN FS (3/8) - The Freshmen traveled to Villa Park to get thier second win on Monday afternoon. Winfield was on fire,pitching a complete game striking out 14 opponents for the win. Nicassio got the 2 RBI's for the Lancers with a hard line drive single to score Cleary and Timmons. GO WOOD!!

MIKE CARP MAKES BIG LEAGUE DEBUT Lakewood Alumni, Mike Carp, Class of 2004, made his Major League debut today (6-17-2009) with the Seattle Mariners. Carp's first AB was a pinch hit appearance in the top of the 7th, against the San Diego Padres in which he drew a walk. On Thursday, 6-18-09, Carp collected his first big league hit and scored his first run, while starting at first base. Carp hit in the second spot and went 1-3.

LAKEWOOD HS: Helped the Lancers to a CIF Championship victory against Agoura HS in 2006 at Anaheim Stadium. Roamed centerfield for three years.
LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE: Transferred to Long Beach City College and started all but one game in his two-year Viking career, collecting 96 hits and stealing a combined 22 bases. Batted .308 his freshman year and earned Second Team All-South Coast Conference honors. Transfered to Chico State in 2009.

LAKEWOOD HS: Graduated in 2005 from Lakewood High School.
DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY: Went on to play at Duquesne University located in Pittsburgh, PA, which plays in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Anderson is a left handed pitcher for the Dukes. He made his collegiate debut at Penn State and pitched one third of a scoreless inning versus Temple to help preserve a Duquesne victory.

In 2006 Travis was voted 1st team all Moore League, Division 1 all CIF first team catcher wile helping lead his team to the 2006 CIF Division 1 Championships & District 4th American Legion Championships. Batting .426, 40 Hits, 28 Runs, with 37 RBI’s in 94 plate appearances.
In 2007 Travis was voted Moore League Player of the Year, All CIF Division 1 catcher, Batted .431 in 109 plate appearances, collecting 45 Hits, producing 42 Runs, with ll Doubles, 4 Triples, with 7 HR’s Travis lead the CIF that year in RBI’s with 52.
Travis was the 37th overall selection in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, 2007

Mike Carp was selected by the Mets with their 9th round pick in the 2004 amateur draft.
He earned ABCA All-American Honors for Region 8 coming out of high school. He had a solid debut season with the Gulf Coast Mets in 2004 and showed promise as a young player on the 2005 Suns. In 2006 he was a key player on the St. Lucie Mets championship team, earning him a spring invite in 2007. Carp impressed manager Willie Randolph and stayed in big league camp until 3 days before the start of the season.

A 15-year veteran utility infielder, who split last season between Baltimore and Cleveland, signed a $1 million, one-year contract in 2008 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Gomez hit .319 in 301 at-bats with the Orioles in 2006-07 before being claimed on waivers by Cleveland on Aug. 2. He had a .283 average in 53 at-bats with Cleveland and has a .261 career average in 1,425 games with seven clubs, beginning with Detroit in 1993. Made is big league debut against the Minnesota Twins. First major league hit was a triple off Kansas City Royals Pitcher Frank Di Pino July 22nd 1993. Attended Lakewood High School in Lakewood, CA, where he was a member of the CIF champions in 1987. He attended Long Beach City College before being drafted by the California Angels in the 30th round of the 1988 amateur draft.
